The Print
This is one of the wild Spanish Colonial Mustangs that roam the Outer Banks. Her ancestors arrived on the wild shores of North Carolina about 500 years ago, many of them escaping shipwrecks off the coast by swimming to land. At one time there were thousands of wild horses, but today there are only about 80 wild horses roaming the beaches and dunes of Corolla, and they are now protected by law. Only as a last resort are severely injured or habituated horses removed from their natural habitat. Buttercup is one such horse, wounded in the wild and brought to a dedicated mustang refuge to receive the veterinary care she needs to heal.
